Summary of four national assessments of mathematics learning in the 9th grade of basic education, 1998–2004

The Finnish National Board of Education (FNBE) has assessed learning outcomes in mathematics among 15–16-year-old pupils in the final 9th grade of compulsory basic education on four occasions since 1998. The purpose of these assessments was to examine, as diversely and reliably as possible, the extent to which objectives set in the National Core Curriculum for Basic Education had been achieved. Another aim was to investigate achievement of educational equality in Finland.
Assessments were based on samples representing the whole country. Those schools excluded from the samples had the chance, if they so wished, to purchase the assessments from the Finnish National Board of Education.
